Staff Blog: Advancing Hope, Healing, and Suicide Prevention Across Allegheny County

By Ikeya Craig-Swatson
Community Engagement Specialist & SAFE Coordinator | NAMI Keystone Pennsylvania

In April, on behalf of the SAFE (Suicide Awareness for Everyone) Task Force of Allegheny County, I attended the 2025 American Association of Suicidology (AAS) Conference in Columbus, Ohio. The four-day experience was incredible and invigorating—filled with powerful learning, deep connection, and renewed commitment to suicide prevention at every level. This national gathering brought together leaders, advocates, researchers, clinicians, and community stakeholders from across the country, all united in one mission: to advance suicide prevention and improve lives through the study and application of suicidology.

I connected with national leaders in suicidology and brought back actionable insights that we are already using to strengthen local prevention efforts. The conference underscored the importance of collaboration, data-driven strategies, and culturally responsive approaches in preventing suicide and promoting resilience.

We extend a heartfelt thank you to Samantha Nadler, Senior Director of Programs at AAS and a Pittsburgh resident, for her support of our mission. We’re excited to share that Samantha has officially joined the SAFE Task Force and will be working with us to help expand our reach and impact.

Samantha has also invited me to serve on the AAS National Conference Planning Committee, a tremendous honor that ensures Allegheny County has a voice at the national table and continues to help shape the future of suicide prevention nationwide.
