Education Program for Parents and Caregivers of Children and Adolescents

NAMI Southwestern PA is pleased to announce the NAMI Basics Education program which will be held at the Children’s Institute of Pittsburgh. Classes begin Wednesday, Oct. 7 and run through Nov. 11. NAMI Basics is offered a no charge to participants.

NAMI Basics is a six-week course designed improve the communication and coping skills of parents and caregivers of children and adolescents who are experiencing mental health problems. In this course,  you will learn the facts about mental health conditions and how best to support your child at home, school and when they are receiving mental health care. The course is taught by trained family members; translation: they have been there too just like you! The teachers will provide you with critical strategies for taking care of your child, your family and yourself.

A recent research study on the NAMI Education program published in the Journal of Child and Family Studies found that the parents and caregivers who participated in the study reported improvements in self-care and empowerment based on the class information given regarding resources, parenting strategies and self-advocacy. Last year alone, 99 percent of participants in this national program said they would recommend the course to other parents.

Register today for the NAMI Basics program. Space is limited and registration is required. Contact the NAMI Southwestern PA office at 412-366-3788 or email sharring@www.namikeystonepa.org for registration and course information.
